BIOGRAPHY
Louis XIV of France was known as Louis the Great or the Sun King.
He was born the 5th of September 1638 in the Castle of Saint-Germaine, France and died the 1st September 1715 in the Palace of Versailles, France, at the age of 76. he is the son of Louis XIII of France and Anne of Austria.
Louis was a monarch of the House of Bourbon, who ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1643 until his death. He reigned 72 years and 100 days, which is the longest reign of any monarch of a major country in Europe.
He started ruling in 1661 after the death of the italian cardinal Mazarin. one year before, in 1660, he married with the Spanish Infant Maria Teresa, son of Phillip IV, King of Spain and Isabel of Bourbon; which impeded Louis of having several lovers. With her he had 6 childrens, Louis XV, Ana Isabel, Maria Ana, Maria Teresa, Felipe Carlos and Louis Francisco. From 1682, Louis lived in Versailles, next to Paris. He founded the academies of painting and sculpture(1655), of sciences(1666) and of architecture(1671), and he also created the comedy-franchaise. He demolished some walls from Paris, he designed the plans of the great abbey of the Elise Champs and restored the Notre Dame Cathedral.
On the foreign policy, his objective was to make his defences from the North and East stronger, and to impede any revival from the Habsburg Dynasty. In the year 1667, he invaded part of the Spanish Low Countries. In 1672, he fought against Holland. Durin six years, the Ditches, with the help of Spain and Austria, they defended the attacks from France.
After the death of the Queen Maria Teresa, in 1683, Louis married in secret with a wife of him from the past, Françoise d'Aubigné, known as Madame of Maintenon.
At the end, Louis died the 1st September 1715, in Versailles, and the Crown passed to Louis XV
